The term 'TCP/IP' is both a general name for the Internet architecture as well as an abbreviation of the two most important protocols in that architecture. The Internet is based on packet-based data transmission. Data is divided into packets that are transported individually from computer to computer and from network to network. Each computer on the network has its own IP address that is uesd to transfer these packets.
